The Cold Springs fire is a great example of how important it is to put your campfire out completely before leaving. In Nederland, Colorado two forest visitors left their campfire going and it escaped, starting the Cold Springs fire which spread into the local community, burning 8 homes. Leaving a fire unattended is a felony arson charge with a maximum penalty of 12 years of jail time and a fine up to $500,000 and or the cost of the suppression efforts. Please make sure you put your campfires out cold, it is not worth the penalty. For more information on the status of the fire click here. For the Cold Fire news report click here.
